Want to Dance 101

So many Flavors, So Little Time

Just like languages and types of foods there are an infinite number of dance styles to suit every palate. Each dance style is unique from the kind of music used, to the general class etiquette and mood, to the kinds of shoes appropriate to the quality of movement and esthetic required.

In the mood for some retro hip jazz stylings? Swing dancing is a fantastic way to meet new people in a laid back atmosphere. Want to really make some noise? Get those toes a-tappin’ with some tap dance lessons. It’s never too late to learn something new and the best part is, there’s plenty to choose from.

As a dance teacher I would recommend picking one style to start with and focus on it for several weeks at least. Give it time, nothing is automatic. It takes time for your body to get accustomed to the movement vocabulary demanded of it. And don’t be discouraged; dancing is not easy, but it’s well worth the work. Be prepared to sweat.

Once you have some experience with one dance style under your belt, feel free to try another. The good news is that movement vocabulary is a transferable skill. Think of it this way; if you learn Spanish, you’ll be at an advantage when trying to learn Italian or French. Likewise, you’ll be able to transfer information learned in the Ballet class to other dance styles such as Jazz or Modern Dance. Think outside the box and never limit yourself. These articles will give you a general overview of a variety of dance styles to get you well on your way. Enjoy!
