A Mighty Vitamin
Much has been written of late about Vitamin D. Various articles have covered the merits of ensuring that people in northern climates or places where the sun doesn’t shine too much increase their consumption of Vitamin D. Doctors have reason to believe that a Vitamin D deficiency may have some link to high rates of multiple sclerosis in Scotland and other countries where hours of daylight is limited.
My own personal lauding of this vitamin came as a result of my adult ballet classes. I loved the classes I was taking, but found the severe foot cramping I succumbed to during class, and later at night, was limiting my enjoyment of them. As a long-distance runner, I’d suffered from leg cramps and was told to increase my potassium to relive them. It seemed to do the trick, but no end of eating bananas had any effect on my foot cramps.
I spoke to a nutritionist, who recommended calcium for the cramps. Several months passed with nary any difference, until one day, I found out through further research that calcium absorption is boosted when taken with vitamin D. Vitamin D and calcium work as partners in strengthening bones and thus are crucial in helping prevent osteoporosis.
Now I take these vitamins together with my meals and my cramps have disappeared.
