Dance Style Resource

Finding the right dance is as important as finding the right teacher. Here’s a [very] brief overview on dance styles and some tips on finding the right teacher.

Acro

Acro is an abbreviated name for acrobatic dance. This style can trace its roots back to the vaudeville era of the early 1900s. Today’s acro, made popular by such groups as Cirque de Soleile, blends both acrobatic and dance movements.

African Dance Tradition

African dance cannot be seen as a unified tradition and much caution should be exercised in any attempts to draw out general threads. Nevertheless, one relatively common denominator is that the dance is completely assimilated into the African lifestyle. The dances are often integrated into work, education, storytelling, play, as well as into the spiritual, celebratory, healing and mourning events.
