The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation (PMHF) in Toronto recently held it's first
Dance to Conquer Cancer event. This year, the disco-themed PMHF event raised $500,000 for cancer research. Leading the disco workshop was performer and
So You Think You Can Dance Canada choreographer/judge Blake McGrath. We had the chance to catch up and see what he's been up to post-
So You Think You Can Dance Canada.
How did you get into dance and what’s your favourite dance style?
My mother decided to put me in dance at the age of 5 because she would see me mimic all of the moves from my sisters dance recital tapes. As for dance styles, Hip Hop and jazz funk are my favourite.
What dance studio(s) did you attend as a kid?
As a child I danced with Dance Factory, Tiffany's Dance Elite and Joanne Chapman's school of dance.
How does dance differ now from when you were taking dance classes?
Dance is no different from back then to right now. It's the soul expressed through movement.
What’s the experience like being a dancer, choreographer and judge?
Being a dancer is the best experience because it is my first love. Judging is a nice feeling because I can now be a voice to inspire and mentor. Choreography is great because I can show my heart and soul through storytelling.
What have you been up to post-So You Think You Can Dance Canada?
Currently I am working hard on my sophomore album Love Revolution, set to release later this year.
Can you tell us about your involvement with this year’s Dance to Conquer Cancer event?
This year for the 2012 Dance to Conquer Cancer event, I will be teaching two disco dances.
What makes you “want to dance”?
Music, passion and energy.
Name three things people may not know about you/highlights in your life so far.
I keep three things close to my heart which are most important to me, God, my family and my fans.
