Since its inception in 1989,
Northern Lights School of Dance (NLSD) has been committed to contributing to the development of artistic expression, the arts and the artistic community in the Yukon.
“We have an amazing arts community, especially for a small community,” says artistic director Deborah Lemaire.
Deemed the North’s premiere dance institution, the school offers training in ballet, modern, creative movement, jazz, tap, hip hop and street dance and allows for learning in a fun environment while fostering and developing creativity.
For the holiday season,
NLSD will be producing a condensed version of
The Nutcracker which will be performed at the Yukon Arts Centre.
NLSD students have the task of juggling regularly scheduled classes and extra rehearsals for the holiday production that has been viewed by more than 1800 audience members.
“We do two school matinees where about eight local schools, some as far as five hours away, come to the theatre to watch us perform,” says Lemaire. “It’s great because a lot of kids from the outlining communities have a chance to have the theatre experience.”
NLSD will also be heading to Dawson City to perform
The Nutcracker at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s. Local children will have the chance to be a part of the production as the “harlequin dolls” and “mice”, while members of Dawson’s community will act as “Adult Party Guests”.
