Last night's episode was the last chance the celebs had to prove to
Dancing with the Stars fans why they should make it to next week's finals -and boy, was it a tight race.
The competitors were given three dance challenges: perform an unlearned Latin dance, the Argentine Tango, and participate in a Cha Cha relay. The first two challenges would have the judges awarding them a score out of 30 per challenge, while the Cha Cha relay had the judges rating the dancers awarding them a score of four, six, eight, or 10.
Ricki Lake and
Derek finished the night at the top of the leaderboard first with a sizzling Samba that earned her a perfect score. Her Argentine Tango was perfect enough for Len and Bruno to give her 10s, but I guess Carrie-Ann wanted more since she gave Ricki a nine. I think Ricki's back has healed (or she wanted to step up her game after JR's week of perfect scores) because there was a new fire in her, a confidence that she belonged on that dance floor. And Len said what we all knew, we'd see Ricki back on the ballroom next week fighting for the mirrorball trophy. Though I expected Ricki to get the 10 for the Cha Cha relay, she was given an eight. Score: 67
That 10 points for the Cha Cha relay was, in a surprise move, awarded to
Rob Kardashian and partner
Cheryl! Rob truly was the udnerdog of the season. As I said before, no one expected him to make it this far. I was doubftul he even had a shot at the mirrorball trophy, but after tonight's performances I say he'd earned his spot at next week's finals. His Samba was by far his best dance this season -probably because he got to shake what his momma gave him. And since it was Cheryl's favourite dance, I think he did her proud. Carrie-Ann even gave him a 10! As for his Argentine Tango, he stepped up his game and played the part of the leading man. I'd love to compare his dance skills in the beginning to now. This guy deserves extra points for his comment on why America should keep him on the show: "Because I love to dance!" Awesome. Score: 65
Coming into the semi-finals, I really thought it would be
JR Martinez and
Karina who would take the top of the leaderboard. Unfortunately, their Paso Doble according to Len was a zero. It didn't impress the judges enough and the choreography was underwhelming. But then we find out JR is still hurting from a twisted ankle and by the way he moved, you could tell it still bothered him. He received a 23, what I think was one of his lowest scores of the season for the first dance. He faired a little better with the Argentine Tango getting nines across the board. Unfortunately, his injury left an opportunity for Rob to sneak in to the Top Two spots usually reserved for JR and Ricki. Score: 56
Now we all know
Hope Solo isn't the strongest dancer. We also know that this is probably her last week competing on the show. What we didn't know was that she really pushed herself this week with partner
Maks dancing a Paso Doble and Argentine Tango. Yes, she scored much lower than all the other contestants, but she really had improved over the weeks. Her confidence had returned. We also got to see a different side of Hope learning about her rough childhood, dealing with the loss of her father and losing at World Cup 2007, and finally, winning the Olympics. Even though we know Hope is going home, we all learned a little something new about her last night. Score: 49
So, there you have it. Tonight, we see who's competing next week for the mirrorball trophy. And if you thought this week's three dances were tough on the dancers, wait until next week. The finalists will have to perform FOUR routines! I hope JR's ankle heals in time, Rob's booty is ready to shake, and Ricki keeps up her A game. It's going to be a great performance night.
