It was Team Tango versus Team Paso on
Dancing with the Stars as the six contestants embraced Halloween Week and rocked out in ghoulish outfits. Last night was the first time this season the dancers received points for both an individual performance and a team performance.
Individual Performances
With a vampire-theme,
David Arquette and
Kym were first to perform dancing the Cha Cha to
Steve Miller Band's "Abracadabra". Though he had a few tricks up his sleeve, thanks to the help of an illusionist, the first illusion didn't pan out due to missing props. Overall, the dance was okay.
Score: 24
JR Martinez and
Karina were next with a "Ghostbusters Theme" Tango. It was the first time (in the package) we see Karina and JR bickering which isn't necessary for this power couple, but that's expected when you want perfection I suppose. Karina made for a beautiful white ghost and JR really showed his graceful side.
Score: 25
Next up was the Irish jig from Irish pro
Tristan and partner
Nancy Grace. Dancing the Jive to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", I didn't find the performance all that entertaining. It was probably the least exciting performance (sorry Tristan) and ended up with the lowest score of the night from the judges. As Carrie-Ann said, you have your good weeks and you have your not-so-good weeks. This was a not-so-good week.
Score: 21
One of my favourites of the night, strictly because I love the "Addams Family Theme" song, was
Rob Kardashian and
Cheryl's Tango performance. Cheryl dressed as Morticia while Rob beared a striking resemblence to Gomez which deserved bonus points for Rob's (failed) attempt to kiss Cheryl's arm seductively. It was cute. I definitely underestimated Rob for this season because he is constantly improving each week and can't wait to see how far he'll go. Maybe the top three?
Score: 25
Ricki Lake and
Derek were next with a Paso Doble to
Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams". We were told Ricki was suffering from a strained rib or two, but watching her performance, you couldn't event tell! Unless she injures herself to the point she can't compete, I don't think she has anything to worry about until the finals.
Score: 27
Last for their solo was Hope Solo and Maks, whose relationship, you can tell is strained. Constantly being in the bottom, or close to the bottom, or not getting those points from the judges has definitely taken its toll. Regardless, I thought their Samba was a step up from last week and though I wasn't a fan of the song selection ("Werewolves in London"), Hope made for a graceful damsel in distress and Maks rocked his Wolverine look.
Score: 24
Team Performances
As the top two of the leaderboard, Ricki and JR were appointed captains to pick their dance team. With the Paso Doble as their dance style, Ricki chose Rob and Hope while JR chose David and Nancy for a Tango.
With a mummified theme, Team Tango was up first dancing to
Rihanna's "Disturbia". The three couples made quite the ghoulish entrance really getting into their characters. David's entertaining expressions along with JR's slick Tango moves (and the fact that Nancy was able to keep up with the lady pros) made for a successful performance, so I thought. The judges weren't loving the solos within the performance saying it was messy and terrible. It's a shame because some of the dancers really needed the points, especially Nancy.
Score:
The final performance of the night went to Team Paso who danced to
Evanesence's "Bring Me Back To Life". Dressed in goth-like clothing, the dance could be summed up in one word: Strong. The judges loved this one. The women held their own, even Hope added a little dramatic flair to her performance, while the men commanded the floor with giant steps across the stage, leaps and some impressive cape work. I was pleasantly surprised how well Rob could keep up with powerful pros, Derek and Maks. I don't know what it is, but every time Derek is on the floor, the energy just picks up. You felt it when it was his and Ricki's turn at the mini solo and the energy continued as the rest of the team joined them. Electrifying.
Score:
Because of the team performances, the leaderboard looked a little different than we are used to seeing. Still leading the pack was Ricki with 53; Rob at 51; with a suprising turn of events Hope at 50 and JR following with 48; David at 47; and Nancy at 44.
As for who's going home tonight, I'd say based on individual performances alone it would be Nancy, though I'd hate to see Team MacGrace go. Though Hope had a pretty good performance last night, she may be in the bottom two for the fourth time this season.
Tonight's results show is going to be extra special with
Justin Bieber,
Boyz II Men and
Christina Perri performing. Dance performances will also include the return of
Mark Ballas and
Chlesie Hightower, and Derek dancing with
So You Think You Can Dance contestant
Alison Holker.
